2007 Lakeshore-Nalcrest
Friendship Tournament
November 24th, 2007
Floyd Welton assembled the Winter Haven Wonders to play in the Lakeshore-Nalcrest Friendship Tournament on Saturday, November 24, 2007. The group of guys on the Winter Haven Wonders all belong to the Winter Haven Senior Softball Club.
Four teams participated in the tournament. Nalcrest has a softball club of about 60 players and the Nalcrest All Stars were created from the population. The community near Nalcrest put together a team and were known as the Lakeshore All Stars. The third team, the Lake Wales Legends, is managed by Kenny Duell from Winter Haven Senior Softball Club.
The first game pitted the Nalcrest All Stars against the Lakeshore All Stars. Lakeshore won that game by the score of 8-7 and advanced to the championship round while Nalcrest went into the losers bracket.
The Lake Wales Legends defeated the Winter Haven Wonders 14-11 in the second game and also qualified to play for first place.
In the losers bracket, the Nalcrest All Stars were the visiting team and the Winter Haven Wonders served as home team. The Winter Haven Wonders won that game 15-7 and received a third place trophy. The Nalcrest All Stars finished 0-2 for fourth place.
The Lake Wales Legends ousted the Lakeshore All Stars to win the tournament. The final score was a lopsided 24-4. The Lakeshore All Stars finished with a 1-1 record and received a second place trophy.
While the games were being played, the Nalcrest community volunteer BBQers lit up the pit and sold hamburgers and hot dogs. Also, chips and drinks were available.
A big THANK YOU goes out to Eddie Diaz for purchasing the trophies and coordinating the tournament. He also footed the bill for the banners and decorative streamers that were displayed around the fences of the playing field.
It is also appropriate to thank the community of Nalcrest for their support and the Nalcrest Senior Softball Club for the use of their field.
The tournament was a huge success and over 200 fans attended the game.
